MultiSet is designed as a rapid network configuration tool for Guralp Systems Digitisers. The concept of operation is that configuration setups are saved and loaded to file, and a single mouse click initiates download of this configuration to all connected digitisers.

The program is self contained, and stand alone. It does not need any explicit installation, and can be run as is, once unzipped.

Operation

The program window has two main areas - the configuration pages on the left and the download control on the right.

To start a new configuration, select the "File | New" menu option, and select one of the digitiser types that is appropriate. This will set all options to a default setting. Using the configuration pages, the user can then customise the settings to suit. Configurations can be loaded and saved using the "File | Open..." and "File | Save..." menu options.

There are a large number of configurable parameters in the digitisers, many of which are of no interest to the majority of users. For this reason, the program has been streamlined to offer a graphical interface for the most common parameters. To support additional commands, the 'Extras' page has been provided to offer the user the ability to add commands to the configuration. These commands take the form of a script, which the digitiser can understand. For more details on the command list, please refer to the digitiser user manual.

Once the configuration has been set up, the second step is to download the new configuration into the digitisers.
The digitisers MUST be directly connected to the serial ports of the computer, and the serial ports must NOT be in use by any other software (eg terminal program, scream, etc). Only serial ports that are not currently in use will show up in the ports list. To refresh the list, click the 'Refresh' button.
When the user clicks the 'download' button, all ports that are selected (shown above with a blue highlight) will be opened for download. The download procedure has four steps (shown as numbers beside the Com Port):

Automatically determine the baud rate of the unit connected to the port. This is achieved by examining the data being received at the port, and therefore requires that the digitiser is connected and transmitting data. Depending on the existing configuration and baud rate, this process may take up to a few minutes.
Switch the digitiser into command mode. Once the baud rate in step 1 has been determined, this step should complete fairly quickly. If not, then there may be a problem with the cable or digitiser, or the auto-sense of the baud rate failed.
The new configuration will be downloaded, and then the digitiser will re-boot.
The download complete, the port will be closed (and the indicator will return to a red dot). A log file is written to disk in the current directory (usually the same location as the multiset.exe program file) which contains a copy of the communications during download.

Technical Notes

The system ID will only be set if a value is entered in the "System Identifier" box. If this box is left empty, the ID in the digitiser will be left as is.

The stream ID is never changed by this program. It is important to the unique identification of the instrument that this stream ID is unique within the network.
