SAFOD - 1st Anniversary
Güralp Systems Ltd.'s deep borehole sensor in the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) has recently reached a major milestone. It has been one year since the sensor was installed at a depth of approximately 1,050m near the small town of Parkfield in California, half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The system has been transmitting real time data flawlessly ever since.
The downhole package consists of:
- CMG-3TB very broadband (VBB) velocity sensor with response from 360s to 100Hz;
- CMG-5TB strong motion sensor with response from DC to 400Hz;
- CMG-DM24mk3 7-channel 24-bit downhole digitiser with serial to optical converter; and
- Single jaw hole lock.
The installation is part of a collaborative experiment with the principal investigators of the SAFOD project, one of the three components of the U.S. National Science Foundation's Earthscope program.
The sensor package, along with the digitiser, are both deployed in the pilot hole. The digitiser is transmitting nine data streams from the sensors: six VBB velocity data channels sampled at 1 and 200sps respectively, as well as the three accelerometer channels sampled at 200sps. The data are part of the SAFOD data mix and are available to researchers through the IRIS Data Center or the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. GSL personnel reported the first results from the experiment at the recent annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America, held in Monterey, California. The slides from their presentation are shown below.
Güralp Systems Ltd. has been building seismometers for deep boreholes since the founding of the company in 1985. The first such instrument was delivered to Japan in the late 1980s and deployed by the crew of RV Joides Resolution at 714m in ODP hole 794 in the Sea of Japan. Since then university researchers, governmental organisations in several countries as well as an international organization have purchased seismic sensors from Güralp Systems for their boreholes. The recent milestone underscores GSL's position as one of the world's foremost suppliers of seismic sensors for all kinds of applications.
