Re-flashing a CMG-DCM to install Platinum Firmware

Platinum is Güralp Systems' next-generation firmware for CMG-EAMs, CMG-NAMs and CMG-DCMs. Platinum firmware offers a number of advantages for CMG-DCM users over the existing DCM firmware and we recommend that all CMG-DCM units being redeployed to new installations are upgraded to Platinum.

This page describes the procedure for upgrading a CMG-DCM to Platinum firmware where the CMG-DCM has corrupt flash memory and cannot boot. If the CMG-DCM is functioning correctly, please use this procedure instead.

The Re-flashing Procedure

This procedure is used to restore a malfunctioning DCM with Platinum firmware. It requires a direct serial connection to the Data Out port at 115,200 baud.

The previously posted procedure for reflashing Platinum firmware is no longer viable. The size of the filesystem image is now too large for the NAND flash chips, even after aggressive compression. Until this issue is resolved, if your DCM is mulfunctioning to the extent that command-line access is impossible, the only method available to re-initialise it is to restore an earlier version of the firmware and then carry out the reimaging procedure (which does not rely on the NAND chips) to upgrade the DCM back to Platinum. This page desribes the procedure.

  • Instructions for reflashing to the earlier version are here.
  • After completing the reflash, if your DCM has internet access, you should configure it with a network address and, if necessary, default gateway before proceeding. This will make following step easier and faster because you can use the network to transfer the required image files. The method of configuring network parameters differs from the method under Platinum firmware, so you should follow the instructions given here.
  • Once the above procedure is complete and access to the command line is restored, follow the instructions here to carry out the reimaging procedure.
