Chapter 2. Introduction

The Güralp ELP-0119 and ELP-0120, used together, provide a means for conveying GPS signals – NMEA and PPS – across up to 150 metres of twisted-pair cable using TIA/EIA-422, commonly known as RS-422. This is useful in situations where it is not possible to position a GPS receiver within 30 metres of the digitiser. GPS signals transmitted in this way provide a significantly better timing source than, for example, NTP over Ethernet.

Both units contain surge-suppressors to provide some protection from electrical transients and both are environmentally protected to IP66.

The system is compatible with both DM24 digitisers (and products including them) and CD24 digitisers (and products including them) but, in both cases, a DM24-compatible GPS receiver must be used. A special adapter cable is required (at the digitiser end of the link) when the system is used with a CD24 digitiser.

Note: Early model ELP-0120s had a 10-way connector or a blanking plate (as shown above) in the central position. This connector is not used.

The ELP-0119 requires an external power supply for itself and the GPS receiver while the ELP-0120 draws its power from the GPS input socket of the connected digitiser.
