Güralp, the leading global provider of force-feedback seismic monitoring instrumentation is launching Fortimus, a strong motion digital accelerometer, at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting this week in New Orleans, USA.

Fortimus for earthquake early warning (EEW) and structural health monitoring

The Fortimus combines the versatile Fortis sensor with the advanced data recording and software communication capability of the Minimus to deliver an advanced instrument that is compact, quick to install and simple to use.

At just 165 mm in diameter and just 84 mm high (with feet), the Fortimus boasts a host of smart features including:

  • A touch-screen 2.4 inch LCD for viewing waveforms, state of health, virtual instrument level and access to full instrument controls.
  • An ultra-low-latency mode for EEW
  • Industry standard triggering algorithms (STA/LTA)
  • Common Alert Protocol (CAP) enabled for automated emergency warning
  • 256 levels of variable gain to optimise performance for a wide range of shaking scenarios
  • Advanced network connectivity – full controls can be accessed on the instrument, via Güralp Discovery, our software platform, or via a standard web browser

The Fortimus is the latest development in the Güralp smart generation of instruments.

Minimus seismic digitiser: Increased functionality and a new eight channel version

Following the success of the Minimus launch in 2016, Güralp, the leading global provider of force-feedback seismic monitoring instrumentation, has extended its capabilities with a host of additional features and is launching an eight channel version for multi-instrument stations at the AGU 2017 Fall Meeting.

Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) and Structural Health monitoring capabilities

The Minimus met an enthusiastic response following its launch in 2016 and since then, significant energy has been invested in further developing the digitisers’ capabilities. New out of the box features include the incorporation of industry standard triggering algorithms for EEW (STA/LTA), multi-instrument voting to mitigate false positive alerts and the Minimus is now Common Alert Protocol (CAP) for automated emergency warning. These new features make the Minimus particularly attractive for EEW and structural health monitoring applications.

New Minimus+ with eight primary digitisation channels

For increased convenience for multi-instrument stations, Güralp are also releasing a larger capacity version, the Minimus+, which offers eight primary digitisation channels. The Minimus+ can accommodate two triaxial instruments (seismometers and/or accelerometers) plus a Radian posthole or borehole and two auxiliary inputs, e.g. for infrasound and/or meteorological feeds. The Minimus+ offers all the features associated with the four channel digitiser including:

  • Advanced software communications for quick and easy instrument and data management
  • Ultra-low-latency mode for EEW - when used with GDI protocol, transmission can be achieved in 40 ms
  • GüVü Bluetooth Android App for installation integrity checking (available for both Android and iOS devices)
  • Hot-swappable data storage and dual-redundant microSD cards
  • Select from GNSS (GPS, GLONASS or BeiDou) or PTP (Precision Time Protocol) timing sources

Güralp Systems are pleased to announce the release of version 4.6 of Scream!, the leading software application for Seismometer Configuration, REaltime Acquisition and Monitoring. The new version offers improved spectrograms and WaveView windows, integration with Google Maps/Google Earth and a host of other features. As with previous releases, this edition is freely available to the end user and is compatible with the full Güralp product range.

Güralp Liber Ocean Bottom Seismometers record migration calls of pygmy blue whales off the coast of Australia and pave way for environmentally responsible exploration.

A fleet of Güralp Liber Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) maintained by Geoscience Australia, funded through AuScope and managed by ANSIR - Research Facilities for Earth Sounding, have recorded the calls of pygmy blue whales as they migrate along the Western Australia coast. As well as demonstrating that the whales stay further from the coast than previously thought, the research has identified an opportunity to test seismic source modelling to ensure environmentally responsible exploration.

The Australian Liber OBS that were deployed are housed in titanium and can remain on the seafloor continuously recording for up to 12 months. They can be commanded to return to the surface using an acoustic communication link. Each OBS incorporates a Güralp 6T-OBS 3-component broadband (0.0167 Hz–100 Hz) seismometer, with a titanium housing; and a hydrophone (2Hz–30KHz) attached to the fourth channel.

The pygmy blue whale calls were recorded on several OBSs on both the broadband seismometers and the hydrophones during a marine seismic survey in 2014-15 that utilised an airgun array as a seismic source. You can listen to an extract of whale calls here, as recorded on the seismometer:



 

It is well established that pygmy blue whales migrate along the Western Australia coast from feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean to breeding grounds in the tropical Indian Ocean although the width of the migration corridor is uncertain. It was believed the whales tend to stay mainly at the edge of the continental shelf during their journey, approaching the coast only in the southern migration leg in November–December at Geographe Bay, Western Australia.

In a project at Curtin University led by Prof Alexander Gavrilov with Garrick Paskos and Alexey Goncharov of Geoscience Australia, hydrophone data from fourteen of the Australian OBSs were processed using CHORUS software, which incorporates an automatic pygmy blue whale sound detector. The results clearly demonstrate that the whales tend to stay 300 to 400 km from the coast, and they rarely move inshore.

The recording of pygmy blue whale calls in the background of active marine survey noise further strengthens the case for using the OBS as a powerful environment monitoring and protection capability. Recording of airgun signals by the OBS allows estimating Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) and Sound Exposure Levels (SEL) to very large offsets exceeding 200 km in some cases. These values could be benchmarked against those predicted by seismic source modelling, and against marine mammals’ injury criteria. Australian OBS data from all new surveys could be made open file to allow further analysis to reduce speculation about the impact of seismic surveys’ noise on marine life.

Anywhen by Philippe Parreno is the latest in the Hyundai Commission, a series of commissions that form a regular feature at the Tate Modern each year between October and March.

Anywhen presents itself as an instrument which performs a series of functions and constructs a series of situations. The hall’s lights are controlled and activated according to different sequences. A changing soundscape is broadcast from various sources, blurring the sense of inside and outside, public and private, natural and technological.

The highly sensitive Güralp 40T seismometer and high fidelity DM24 digitiser forms one element of the technology working behind the scenes of the commission. The seismometer is being used like a musical instrument; data comes from ground movement within Tate Modern, which is then transformed into music with a programme designed by Nicolas Leroy. 

Tate Modern is one of the world’s largest modern and contemporary art galleries and is housed in a former Victorian era power station built on the Southbank of the Thames in central London. The Turbine Hall is a vast five storey floorspace that hosts an annual specially commissioned work by leading contemporary artists.

Dr Chris Potts, Güralp Executive Chairman explains his reasons for supporting the exhibit.

“We were intrigued when we were first approached to assist with this exhibit. The concept of combining seismic signals as part of an art work is a compelling one and allows us to explore how our instruments may contribute outside the scientific arena.
