Guralp, 'explosive earth' volcano, eruption

Güralp Systems Ltd, the leading global provider of seismic monitoring instrumentation and solutions, is proud to be sponsoring the Explosive Earth exhibit by the University of Cambridge at the 2016 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London from the 4th – 10th July.

The Explosive Earth exhibit showcases research in the field of volcano seismology, specifically the 30,000 earthquakes that led up to a spectacular six-month eruption in Iceland in 2014. The study utilised an array of 70 Güralp seismometers as well as other geophysical instrumentation to monitor the earthquakes. The study is instrumental in developing understanding of the physical processes that occur in volcanic systems prior to an eruption which is important for eruption forecasting. The study also has potential to shed light on triggering seismicity resulting from geological engineering such as near geothermal areas or hydraulic fracturing sites.

Professor Bob White of Cambridge University commented

"The success of this research was underpinned by the excellent data recorded using Guralp seismometers, which had operated robustly and reliably for many years in the hostile Icelandic volcanic environment"

Designed for visitors of all ages, the exhibit includes a number of hands-on activities to inspire the next generation of seismologists and volcanologists.

Dr Chris Potts, Güralp Executive Chairman explains the reasons for sponsoring the exhibit

“Although we are a British company, given the relatively low seismic activity here in the UK, we don’t often get the opportunity to showcase our instruments to our nearest neighbours. So, of course, we are incredibly proud that this ground breaking research project by a British university utilising Güralp seismometers will be showcased at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, we were delighted to get involved.”

The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition is a free, week-long festival that explores and celebrates the UK’s most revolutionary research. Featuring 22 curated exhibits and a series of inspiring talks and activities, the exhibition is suitable for all ages.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Güralp (www.guralp.com) is a leading global provider of sophisticated seismic monitoring solutions used to understand natural seismological events such as earthquakes, aftershocks and volcanos, as well as induced seismic events, or seismic signals, resulting from human activity.

Our solutions are used in research, civil and industrial applications to increase understanding, optimise processes and to protect people and the environment. Our equipment is installed in all major ocean basins and across all continents worldwide.

Our instruments range in performance from very low frequency, very low noise for global seismology to high dynamic range instruments for local, strong motion monitoring. Our sensors and can be supplied for deployment at the surface, in boreholes and on the ocean bottom. We also provide data acquisition equipment, power and communication accessories and data interpretation software.

Our services include installation and commissioning; network operation; repair and maintenance services; data processing and interpretation.

Headquartered in Reading, in the UK, we have been operating for more than 30 years and have established a global network of distributors who provide local customer support and sales services.
