Aluminium demonstrates it's strength at depth

The Güralp engineering department have just received an Aquarius Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) back for a service and update following a successful 12 month deployment in the North Atlantic at a depth of ~3000 metres.

The Aquarius, which is the smallest autonomous OBS available on the market, was supplied to Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) in 2019 to form part of the Insitu Marine Laboratory for Geosystems Research (iMARL) network of underwater sensors.

When designing the pressure vessel that houses the Aquarius sensors, anodized aluminium was selected over stainless steel to reduce the size of the buoyancy required to bring the unit back to the surface. This has significant cost benefits to the end user, including material, storage and deployment savings.

Our engineering team was delighted to see the Aquarius pressure vessel, machined in one of our in-house CNC facilities, has come back up looking as good as new.

Following the visit to our service department, the Aquarius unit will be returned to the project team at DIAS ready for re-deployment.

You can find out more about the Aquarius here.

ABOUT GÜRALP SYSTEMS LTD

Güralp Systems (www.guralp.com) is a leading global provider of sophisticated seismic monitoring solutions used to understand natural seismological events such as earthquakes, aftershocks and volcanos, as well as induced seismic events, or seismic signals, resulting from human activity.

Our solutions are used in research, civil and industrial applications to increase understanding, optimise processes and to protect people and the environment. Our equipment is installed in all major ocean basins and across all continents worldwide.

Our instruments range in performance from very low frequency, very low noise for global seismology to high dynamic range instruments for local, strong motion monitoring. Our sensors and can be supplied for deployment at the surface, in boreholes and on the ocean bottom. We also provide data acquisition equipment, power and communication accessories and data interpretation software.

Our services include installation and commissioning; network operation; repair and maintenance services; data processing and interpretation.

Headquartered in Reading, in the UK, we have been operating for more than 30 years and have established a global network of distributors who provide local customer support and sales services.
