Problems installing ART with Scream on Windows 10 and 11
Overview
There are two common problems encountered when installing ART 3 along with Scream on a Windows 10 or 11 PC. Fortunately, both are easy to rectify. They both result in error messages:
The solutions are described below.
.NET Framework not installed
If you choose to install ART 3 along with Scream on a Windows 10 or 11 PC, you may see an error message saying that the .NET Framework is not installed. This can be misleading because it can occur even when the one or more versions of .NET are are already installed.
The error arises because ART 3 depends on a version of the MatLab™ Compiler Run-time (MCR) which, in turn, depends on the .NET 3.5 Framework. Recent versions of Windows 10 and 11 include other versions of .NET, but not 3.5. Fortunately, it is easy to download and enable the required version alongside any other version which may be installed. This can be done without affecting other programs which may rely on different versions. This document explains how.
Installing the .NET 3.5 framework
To install and enable the .NET 3.5 framework, type
into the Windows search box and then click on the Control panel item, as shown:
The following window opens:
Locate the entry for .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and click in the empty box () next to it. The box will then be shown with a black square () in it:
Click to install the framework. You may be asked to download additional software: follow the on-screen prompts as they appear.
Once the framework is installed, repeat the Scream installation. If this doesn't solve the problem, please contact for help.
(This YouTube video shows a slightly different but essentially equivalent method of installing the framework.)
mclmcrrt77.dll was not found
Sometimes, when installing ART3, you see the error The code execution cannot proceed because mclmcrrt77.dll was not found. Re-installing the program may fix this problem. You should, initially, ignore this and continue the installation.
Once the installation has completed, key windows + e to open Windows Explorer and then navigate to the directory into which you have just installed ART3. This is normally C:\Program Files (x86)\Guralp Systems\Scream4.6.
Locate ART3.exe in this folder. (If your Explorer hides file extensions, this will appear as ART3 with a "type" of Application.) Right-click on it and select . This will uncompress the ART3.ctf file, which contains the missing mclmcrrt77.dll.
You should then have a complete installation of ART3 which can be used as documented in the ART manual MAN-SWA-0003.
