Chapter 2. Introduction

2.1 Equipment Overview

The Güralp Systems Güralp NET-1001 is a communications aid which allows connection of wired Ethernet, wireless Ethernet or serial devices to an existing network.

The device supports the following functions:

Internally, the module uses a Lantronix Wi-port NR Ethernet module.

2.2 Ports

Note: Refer to Appendix D on page 22 for information on connector pin-outs.

2.2.1 External Ports

There are 5 ports on the connector face of the Güralp NET-1001. These are described below.

2.2.1.1 SERIAL 1 and SERIAL 2

Two serial ports configured for 3-wire RS232 (RX, TX and GND).

Each may function as an independent TCP to serial converter. SERIAL 1 is used to configure the device. SERIAL 2 has a watchdog reset function associated with it. Both can also function as power inputs or outputs.

2.2.1.2 ANTENNA

A standard N-type antenna connector.

2.2.1.3 ETHERNET

This port provides both Ethernet (100BASE-TX) and an alternative power input (with the same specification as the POWER connector).

2.2.1.4 POWER

This port is used to connect DC power. The device operates over the range 10V DC to 28V DC. The port can be used as an input or an output.

2.3 Power options

The Güralp NET-1001 has power connections on the POWER port and also on both SERIAL 1 and SERIAL 2. These are connected together internally so any can be used as either an input or as an output. This allows for flexible power cabling, as shown in the following examples.

2.3.1 Stand-alone use

When the device is not used with other Guralp equipment, provide 10V DC to 28V DC power via the POWER port using cable CAB-030-0032.

2.3.2 As a network server for a Güralp DM24

Cable CAS-DCM-0001 (green) between the DATA port of the Güralp DM24 and either SERIAL 1 or SERIAL 2 of the Güralp NET-1001 will provide both an RS232 connection and a power connection. Power can then be provided via cable CAB-030-0032 (grey) connected to either the POWER port of the Güralp NET-1001 (as shown) or to the DATA port of the Güralp DM24.

Similar arrangements work with Güralp CD24 and Güralp Minimus digitisers.

2.3.3 As a WiFi server for a Güralp EAM (Peli-cased)

Güralp EAMs in Peli (plastic) cases do not provide power via the Ethernet port. Cable CAS-DCM-0001 (green) between either PORT A or PORT B of the Güralp EAM and SERIAL 1 of the Güralp NET-1001 will provide both an RS232 connection and a power connection.

Note: The SERIAL 2 port cannot be used for power input in this case because the watchdog function will be activated - see section 3.3.

Cable CAB-DCM-0056 (yellow) is required for the Ethernet connection and power can then be supplied to both units via cable CAB-030-0032, connected to the DATA OUT port of the Güralp EAM.

2.3.4 As a WiFi server for a Güralp Affinity or DM24SxEAM

The Güralp Affinity or Güralp DM24SxEAM can provide switchable power to the Güralp NET-1001 via the Ethernet port (see section 4.3). Use cable CAB-DCM-0056 (yellow) to provide the network connection and then supply power to the Affinity or DM24SxEAM via either cable CAB-DCM-0042 to the POWER port or cable CAB-BDA-0103 or CAB-030-0032 to the DATA port.
