Chapter 4. Wired/Wifi Bridge

The device may act as a bridge to connect a single wired device on its Ethernet socket to a wireless network. Note that it only supports a single device (one MAC address).

In this mode, the serial ports do not function, except that the set-up function on SERIAL 1 is still active.

Note: Do not connect a serial device to SERIAL 2. This will activate the watchdog function and reset the Lantronix device every 10 minutes.

4.1 Set-up

In set-up mode (see Appendix A - Configuration), select menu:

0 Server

Choose network mode 2. See section 5.1.3 for information about how to set DHCP mode or a static IP address., but note that this only sets the address for the unit when there is no connected wired Ethernet device. It is also necessary to set the WiFi network details in menu:

4 WLAN

The wired device must also have its Ethernet interface configured. The IP address settings (whether DHCP or static) from the wired device are used.

4.2 Operation

The device will transparently bridge any packets from the wired Ethernet device onto the wireless network.

Any packets sent to wireless clients that have a destination of the wired device's MAC address (or a broadcast address) will be transmitted to it.

Note: It is necessary for the wired device to transmit at least one packet before the Lantronix device activates bridge mode. This will be completely automatic if DHCP is used, but care must be taken to make an outbound connection from the wired device first if static IP addresses are used.

If used with an associated Güralp EAM, it is good practice to use a PPP watchdog to perform this set-up task.

4.3 Use with Güralp EAM

Certain models of Güralp EAM have an auxiliary power output on the 6-way mil-spec Ethernet port. The Güralp NET-1001 can be used, with a single cable, to allow these devices to be connected to a wireless Ethernet network (see section 2.3.4).

Use cable CAS-PEP-0048. This provides both power and Ethernet (it is an Ethernet crossover cable to allow the two devices to talk without the need for an intermediate switch).

On the Güralp EAM, configure the port power to be on by default. This is found in Configuration → All options → GPIO labels and power switch settings (Power up tab). The Ethernet port uses Ext0_power; set this to "Power On" to have it automatically switch on once the EAM has booted up.

Create a watchdog service to ensure robust operation. Go to Configuration → Services → Network → pppd-watchdog. Select "Create new service instance", and press the "Expert" button at the bottom of the screen. Set the following options:
