MSH-NAM-0004 - Using a NAM with GPS as a timing source - Application Note

Chapter 2. Introduction

It is always preferable to use GPS receivers as timing sources for digitisers because this provides the highest degree of accuracy. In situations where this is not possible, a NAM equipped with a GPS receiver can provide timing via the NTP protocol to one or more attached EAMs – either stand-alone or embedded in digitisers or digital instruments – which can then generate NMEA and PPS signals (synthesised GPS) for attached digitisers.

This document describes how to configure such systems. Throughout the document, references to EAMs should be read as references to EAMs, EAM-equipped digitisers and/or EAM-equipped instruments, such as the 5TCDE.

NAMs and EAMs run the Platinum operating system, which is fully described by MAN-EAM-0003. This document can be downloaded from the GSL website at <a href="https://www.guralp.com/documents/">https://www.guralp.com/documents/">https://www.guralp.com/documents/MAN-EAM-0003.pdf">www.guralp.com/documents/MAN-EAM-0003.

The details in this manual pertain to a system running firmware build 13411. Later firmware builds may show some small differences but the underlying principles remain the same.
